McWilliams Arroyo Wins WBC Interim Flyweight Belt
Puerto Rican McWilliams Arroyo became WBC Interim flyweight Champion by defeating Mexican Abraham Rodríguez via technical knockout.
Originally, McWilliams Arroyo was to fight Absolute Champion Julio César “Rey” Martínez; who unfortunately suffered a fractured right hand, and had to pull out again.
Considering the different factors, the WBC decided to sanction the McWilliams Arroyo vs. Abraham “Choko” Rodríguez clash for the Interim Flyweight Crown.
“Choko” who travelled long and far from Tijuana to reach Miami, was brave to take and to accept this last moment challenge, against a more skilled and experienced opponent. Yet, the Puerto Rican, was determined there would be no margin for error or any slip up.
They touched gloves as the bell rang to start each round, and Choko started brightly, with fast hands and with mobility on rapid pins. But by the third, McWilliams, who was walking him down was connecting hard with big left hooks to the head and solid left right combinations. Choko, who was trying to box and move, already had a badly swelled left cheekbone.
In the fourth he took a knee after being hurt by a straight right, bravely got up and absorbed more to head and body.
In the fifth Choko landed a good left but it had scant effect on the bigger man who himself landed a crunching right hook, which nearly put the Mexican down.
McWilliams then launched a sustained two fisted attack, so much so, that the Ring Doctor climbed on to the ring apron and urgently wave his arms to stop the one way traffic, to avoid a train wreck. So Referee Sam Burgos stopped it at one minute and forty one seconds of the fifth.
